Absolutely marvelous collection of short stories! Themes are not always easy to pinpoint, but the details and the story dynamics show the hand of a true master. He wrote this before he wrote the Grapes of Wrath, and you can even find one scene from that novel as a short story in this collection! I read The Red Pony as a separate novella before picking up this collection of stories (not realising that the former work was included). As with any short story collection it's going to be a mixed bag, but overall there is a cohesiveness to Steinbeck's work. In particular, the first two stories are interesting in their approach to female experience (lacking in the Steinbeck work I've read so far). This book of stories also included The Red Pony. I find Steinbeck uniquely magical and soothing. Many of these short stories seemed to have a little touch of magic, which is a bit outside his norm. Not too much, just right. Its was an excellent collection.

This is a nice collection of Steinbeck short stories, and includes the novella, The Red Pony (all four parts). Most of the short stories are set in his Salinas Valley and are not feel good reading. But it's Steinbeck and you'll be wowed by his writing, vivid characters, and well painted settings.
